I played this and I'm honestly not a fan. Overall, the game made me smile a lot! It’s probably the most solid, well thought-out, and beautiful of all the rom hacks I’ve played of Zelda! Dawn & Dusk is my other favorite, and now it’s The Missing Link too. Constraints are important, and TML uses constraints wisely and tastefully. I was very happy with the very limited inventory because I feel like other rom hacks try and force the usage of most of the traditional inventory and it’s just too much. So happy there wasn’t a single Iron Knuckle in the game.

I’m also glad they didn’t spam Stalfos and Iron Knuckles.

I also feel like too many mods try to exploit pixel-perfect physics and frame-perfect timing to solve puzzles (Looking at you, Oot Puzzling And Nimpize.), and aside from a few bad jumps, I didn’t get stuck anywhere trying again and again and again to do one thing perfectly without dying and just getting frustrated and having to take a break. There was a perfect balance of wide and narrow that felt more natural to a Zelda game.
#Legend of zelda the missing link mod
This mod achieves more important distinctions from others, mainly because they didn’t design huge, expansive, wide open spaces for EVERYTHING that make traveling feel cumbersome and Link feel like he was shrunken down to a Minish. And it was pure trolling evil to make the mini hands require two strikes. The floor master mini boss was endless anxiety, but I also really appreciate how they didn’t just recycle old mini bosses and did something new with an old enemy. I appreciate how the hourglass was necessary to beat it, but disappointed how easy it was to land a half dozen strikes. It definitely wasn’t easy, which is how a boss should be. Yes it was hard to maneuver around with the legs constantly damaging you, and I got very close to game over, but creating an entirely new enemy is insane, and it looked really cool and well put-together, so I can forgive anything. I was really impressed with the final boss design and what they did with it.

Also loved Bombchus being put to use but holy god that heart piece mini game with the skull kid and hitting switches was hard.īiggest complaint is a few of the jumps were very precarious, especially at some parts in the deep woods, that made it way too easy to lose hearts if you didn’t leap somewhere at the perfect angle or stop short in less than second. Just wish I could have used him more! Then again I didn’t find the last two heart pieces.

:’) The idea of a cuckoo that returns and you can use it as a tool was a smart idea. And I was overjoyed to see ol’ Cojiro finally get some love and justice. I felt like MM lacked making good use of bunny hood jumps, so this was welcome to me. I loved the new mechanics of the sword beam, and like others have said, it’s a shame the hourglass was introduced so late because it’s a super cool and interesting idea. It was an impressive dungeon and I loved the new puzzle ideas with the red and blue blocks. It had a few really beautiful rooms that I enjoyed gazing at. Hollow Root Keep was long and challenging because it was easy to get lost and sometimes hard to figure out what to do, but I think this is a good thing because dungeons shouldn’t be clear-cut and we should have to wander and think through them, and not just because there are pixel-hidden switches we miss like other romhacks. I also wish there was more done with the deep woods near the end when you reach Monktown. Overall I enjoyed the exploitability/discoverability in order to progress. The resolution of the curse confused me and felt underwhelming, especially considering what the pirates were guarding. I really loved how Monktown Valley itself was a dungeon, though I wished there was a little more content there because there were some good ideas and setups that I feel like weren’t fully realized. I especially loved the grotto music, Monktown Sanctuary, and Hollow Root Keep grew on me and it’s been stuck in my head ever since.

It has a lot of nuance and complexity that doesn’t sound overstimulating and aimless like a few other rom hacks’ custom music. I feel like the music captured the feel of the Zelda music of that era, while still being unique. It’s super impressive and very inspiring! The art direction is beautiful, and I loved the music.
